Question:
After replacing a clogged black cartridge in a Canon Pixma printer, the new one works fine, which suggests the old cartridge was blocked. The recommended cleaning instructions didn't solve the issue with the old cartridge. I heard about using unclogging solutions or liquids-what are these, and how should they be applied? Can they be injected inside the cartridge or just applied to the printhead? Also, my color cartridge has a magenta channel that is not printing. How can I unclog it?
Answer:
What an Unclogging Solution Is
Unclogging fluids are specially formulated cleaning solutions designed to dissolve dried ink inside the nozzles of cartridges and printheads. They are typically water-based with added surfactants or solvents to break down hardened ink. Unlike plain water or alcohol, these fluids are engineered to be safe for inkjet components and prevent further damage.
How to Apply the Solution
For Canon Pixma cartridges, unclogging can be done in two main ways:
-
Applying to the Printhead Surface
-
Remove the cartridge and place it on a paper towel.
-
Apply a few drops of unclogging solution directly to the metal mesh or printhead nozzle plate.
-
Let it sit for a few minutes, then gently dab with a lint-free cloth or paper towel.
-
Reinstall the cartridge and run a cleaning cycle from your printer's software.
-
-
Soaking Method
-
Place the cartridge (nozzle side down) in a shallow dish with just enough unclogging fluid to cover the printhead.
-
Leave it for a few hours or overnight for severe clogs.
-
Dry thoroughly before reinstalling.
-
-
Injecting Solution Inside the Cartridge (with Caution)
-
This method is only effective for refillable cartridges, not sealed OEM ones.
-
Use a syringe with a blunt needle to gently push a small amount of solution into the cartridge's ink chamber.
-
Be careful not to overfill or apply too much pressure, as this can damage the internal sponge or cause leaks.
-
Afterward, reinstall and run the cleaning cycle.
-
Dealing with a Magenta Channel Not Printing
When a single color like magenta is missing:
-
Confirm the cartridge has ink-sometimes the magenta reservoir is simply empty.
-
If it does contain ink, apply unclogging solution using the surface or soaking method described above.
-
In stubborn cases, repeated cleaning cycles combined with soaking may be necessary.
-
If none of these methods restore the magenta channel, the nozzle array for that color may be permanently damaged, in which case replacing the cartridge is the only solution.
Error Codes to Watch For
Canon printers may display messages such as "Cartridge not recognized" or U052 (Printhead error) if the printhead is electrically damaged rather than clogged. In those cases, cleaning fluid won't help, and replacement is required.
Addressing printer issues can be complicated since the root cause often requires hands-on testing. For that reason, we can't provide remote troubleshooting or direct repair support. However, we do offer in-person evaluations through our printer repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Please note this is on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take several weeks before your printer can be checked in. While our rates may not be the lowest, our service can cover either complete printers or specific part-level repairs.
That said, we encourage self-help solutions-explore our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies), and use the search bar on the channel to find videos related to Canon cartridge cleaning. YouTube's algorithm may also recommend useful videos from other creators.
Thank you again for reaching out and for your patience. I hope these steps help you get your Canon Pixma cartridges back in working order.
