Customer Question
I'm converting my Epson 8550 into a DTF printer and made several modifications: I changed the ink damper housing, installed a drag chain, and connected OEM clear tubes for a CISS setup. The printer is brand new and hasn’t been loaded with ink yet. However, upon powering it on, I’m getting an error code 000031. I’m based in Michigan and need help resolving this issue. Also, do you sell just the detachable part of the drag chain?
Answer
Understanding Epson Error Code 000031
Error 000031 on the Epson 8550 indicates:
CR Load Position Excess (Carriage Load Position Error)
This means that the Carriage Return (CR) motor stopped midway through its movement cycle. It’s a critical startup check, and several factors could be causing it, particularly after hardware modifications like those you’ve done for a DTF setup.
Here’s a breakdown of potential causes and solutions:
Possible Causes and Fixes
1. Obstruction in the CR Motion Range
-
Cause: Something may be physically blocking the carriage’s path. This can be the drag chain, cables, or even part of the CISS tubing.
-
Fix: Move the print head gently by hand (with the printer off). Ensure there’s no resistance, kinks in tubing, or snags from the drag chain. The tubing should move freely without tension or restriction.
2. Ink System Interference
-
Cause: The newly installed CISS tubes might be applying torque or drag on the carriage.
-
Fix: Secure tubing with enough slack to allow movement. Check your drag chain's routing—ensure it is appropriately aligned and not tugging the carriage at either end of its travel.
3. CR Lock or Mechanical Overload
-
Cause: The CR lock (parking mechanism) may not be releasing correctly, especially if something is out of alignment or jammed.
-
Fix: Check the CR lock mechanism for binding. It should disengage smoothly when the printer powers on.
4. CR Timing Belt Issues
-
Cause: A loose, frayed, or misaligned CR timing belt will cause inaccurate positioning.
-
Fix: Inspect the belt for slack or wear. If loose, you’ll need to adjust the tension or replace the belt.
5. CR Encoder Scale Contamination
-
Cause: The encoder scale (a transparent plastic strip behind the carriage) may have dust, fingerprints, or ink smudges.
-
Fix: Clean it gently using a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher). Be cautious not to scratch it.
6. CR Motor Failure
-
Cause: The motor itself might not be delivering consistent torque or may have an electrical failure.
-
Fix: You can test the motor by powering on the printer without the ink system connected to see if movement improves. If the motor fails, replacement is required.
7. Main Board Failure
-
Cause: Rare, but it can happen—particularly if wiring shorted during modification.
-
Fix: As a last resort, swap out the mainboard with a working one from a donor printer or purchase a replacement.

Final Note
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. Therefore, we're unable to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, it may take a few weeks before we can arrange for your printer to drop it off. Our services are structured to repair either the whole printer or specific parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. However, we acknowledge that our rates aren't the most economical. Thus, we highly recommend that you resort to self-help via online research. You can start by checking out YouTube or visiting our YouTube channel's homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Look for specific videos using the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar. I receive dozens of queries every day asking about videos for specific topics. Having created videos over the past nine years, it's challenging to remember every single one. Therefore, using YouTube's search function would be the most efficient approach. Additionally, YouTube may suggest relevant videos from other channels that can assist you.
Thanks again for reaching out, and we appreciate your dedication to the DTF conversion community. We wish you the best of luck getting your Epson 8550 up and running smoothly!
