Question:

How to Remove the Outer Casing of My Epson L1800, Artisan 1430 1400, or 1390 Printer to Have Access to the Waste Capping Station. Can you walk me through the process?

Answer:

Remove the Outer Casing of Epson L1800, Artisan 1430, 1400 and 1390

The Epson L1800, Artisan 1430, 1400 & 1390 printers require some disassembly of the case, which takes quite a while due to the number of screws and clips.

A Complete Tutorial on Casing Removal

Step 1: Get the right tools

Description of ToolEssential Tool UsedSmall Phillips screwdriver (for screws)

Plastic prying tool or flathead screwdriver (for releasing plastic clips)

Tweezers (optional, for manipulating small screws)

Container or magnetic tray (for screws tracking)

Step 2: Turn Off and Prepare Printer

Let the printer power down and you can unplug it as well.

Take out any paper trays and unplug any USB or network cables.

Tuck any wires and cables so they are not dangling, as well — in the downtime between prints or otherwise, if you have a continuous ink system (CISS) or modified ink setup, be sure that it is firmly secured to avoid an unexpected ink spill.

Step 3: Find and Remove the Screws

Most Epson printers have screws in the following places:

Fill the following on the printer back panel screws (hint: usually in the back, around the hinges of the scanner unit if it has one).

Screws: Side Panel – On some models, screws are holding down the side covers.

Cover Screws — If your printer has a scanner lid, look between the hinges.

Front Panel Screws — Some models — especially some early inkjet models — hide these screws behind the paper output tray.

Tip: Search on YouTube for the model of your printer and the keywords “disassembly” to find the exact screws for your model.

Step 4: Remove the Plastic Clips

After you have removed all of the visible screws, carefully pry the casing apart with a plastic pry tool or a flathead screwdriver.

Caution: Epson printers use plastic clips that can break easily. To pop it out, apply slight pressure along the edges of the cover.

If the casing appears to be stuck, look for hidden screws underneath labels or rubber feet.

Step 5: Pull the outer casing up and out

If required, gently open the panels on top and/or side to access the waste capping station and other internal parts.

Watch out for ribbon cables running to the control panel. Don’t pull the cover off unless you have confirmed that no cables are attached.

If needed, take tweezers to free any cables gently.
