Fixing HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 'No Printhead' Error and Updating Firmware

Question: My HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 displays a "No Printhead" error as soon as I power it on. I’d like to get updates, but I can’t access the printer menus. How do I resolve this and update the printer’s firmware?

Answer:

Step 1: Inspect and Reseat the Printhead

Dealing with this problem is the priority as your printer will not be able to print without a working printhead. Follow these steps:

Shut off the printer and disconnect it from the electrical outlet.

Open the printer cover, and eject all the ink cartridges.

Identify the printhead latch, gently lift it and remove the printhead.

Examine the printhead contacts for ink residue, dirt or any damage. If needed, clean gently with a lint-free cloth.

Make sure to recline the printhead well enough and lock the latch.

Reinstall the ink cartridges.

Put the printer cover back down and turn the printer on.

If the error still appears, the printhead has probably broken down, and cannot be repaired. But before considering a replacement, try updating the printer’s firmware.

STAGE 2:  COMPUTER FIRMWARE UPDATING FOR PRINTER

Updating it via the printer’s menu is impossible since the printer is stuck on the error screen. Instead, update using a computer:

Navigate to HP Support page : HP’s Firmware update page (https://support.hp.com)

Type “HP OfficeJet Pro 8600” in the search field and choose the specific model you have.

Excited to share the new Firmware update for your printer.

Launch the firmware update utility on your PC.

Just follow the instructions that you see on screen to get the update installed. This might involve temporarily linking the printer to the computer with a USB.

If you continue to experience Printhead Error

If the update does not solve the problem, then your printhead may be permanently damaged. The HP printhead has an internal chip that will die and will never come back to life. Perhaps you'll need a new or refurbished printhead. Look for compatible printheads by browsing online or through HP’s official parts store.

Deciding Whether to Repair or Replace

Printers can be surprisingly difficult to fix because multiple components operate in concert. If the printhead fails, other components — like your motherboard or ink delivery system — may also be on their way to failing. We recommend BCH Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service) for a professional assessment.
