Question:
My Epson ET-2803 printhead seems to be stuck—it won’t move to the left. The printer is approximately four years old and has been functioning well until now. How can I fix this?
Answer:
Diagnosing the Stuck Printhead on Epson ET-2803
When the printhead of the Epson ET-2803 doesn’t move to the left, the printhead locking mechanism is likely engaged. This mechanism is designed to hold the printhead securely in place when the printer is powered off or in standby mode. However, mechanical or spring-related issues can prevent the lock from disengaging properly.
Here’s how you can manually troubleshoot and attempt to fix the issue:
Step-by-Step Manual Reset:
-
Push the Printhead to the Right:
Carefully and gently push the printhead to the right side of the printer until it makes contact with the internal frame. This may trigger the internal sensor or allow the lock mechanism to retract. -
Rotate the Main Paper Feed Rod:
Locate the central paper feed rod (it runs horizontally and is usually driven by a gear). Rotate this rod counterclockwise for about three full turns. This motion typically causes the white printhead lock mechanism to retract backward—towards the front of the printer. -
Observe the Lock Mechanism:
Watch for the white plastic part near the right edge of the carriage area—the printhead lock arm. If it retracts as expected, the printhead should now be free to move. -
Spring Inspection:
If the lock does not retract, there’s a good chance that the small return spring that controls the locking arm has come off or is missing. This is fairly common in older printers. If the spring is missing or dislodged, the lock will not release properly.Unfortunately, we don’t sell this spring individually, but we do offer a compatible spring that comes as part of a replacement locking mechanism. You can find it in this product:

Other Possible Causes to Consider:
-
Power Failure During Maintenance: If the printer loses power during maintenance, the firmware may still think the printhead is locked. Unplug the printer, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
-
Firmware Error: In rare cases, the firmware might lock the printhead after encountering an error (e.g., 0x9A or 0x97 errors). If any error codes appear on the screen, document them and search specifically for those error codes.
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. Therefore, we're unable to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis. It may take a few weeks before we can get your printer to drop it off. Our services are structured to repair either a whole printer or specific parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. However, we acknowledge that our rates aren't the most economical. Thus, we recommend that you resort to self-help via online research. You can start by checking out YouTube or visiting our YouTube channel's homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Look for specific videos using the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar. I receive dozens of queries every day asking about videos for specific topics. Having created videos over the past nine years, it's challenging to remember every single one. Therefore, using YouTube's search function would be the most efficient approach. Additionally, YouTube may suggest relevant videos from other channels that can assist you.
Once again, thank you for your patience and for getting in touch. We genuinely appreciate your support and engagement with BCH Technologies
