Epson XP-440 Not Printing After Mainboard Replacement - Paper Out Error and Blank Nozzle Check Fix Guide

Question: After replacing the mainboard on my Epson XP-440 because the USB port stopped recognizing the printer, the printer now feeds paper for a nozzle check but prints completely blank pages and then shows a "Paper Out" message. Reloading paper and pressing start just repeats the same process. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

Answer:

Now, based on your description-paper feeds, no ink on the page, then "Paper Out" message-the issue is likely not paper-related but ink-delivery or electronic communication related. Since you replaced the mainboard, the first thing to check is whether the printhead is properly connected and recognized. A loose or misaligned printhead FFC cable can cause blank prints because the head is not receiving firing signals. Carefully reseat the printhead cables and inspect for bent pins. Next, check the mainboard's printhead driver chip-if the original failure (USB issue) was electrical in nature, there's a chance a shorted head may have damaged the driver circuit on the new board as well. Also inspect the small surface-mount fuse near the printhead driver area on the board; if that fuse is blown, the head won't fire at all, resulting in blank pages.

From the ink-delivery side, make sure the printhead is properly parked on the capping station. Turn the printer on and let the head settle naturally onto the capping station. It is safe to do this with power on. Once parked, connect a syringe with tubing to the waste ink line and gently draw 4-6 ml of air first. You should feel slight resistance. If you only draw air, the head is not sealing correctly on the capping station or there is a leak. If you feel complete blockage and cannot draw anything, the capping station may be clogged. Once you confirm resistance, slowly draw until the black rubber plunger passes the 2 ml mark and hold for about 10 seconds. You may hear the damper membrane crinkle, which indicates the nozzles are opening. After that, run a standard cleaning cycle-but avoid strong cleaning and do not perform back-to-back cleanings within 12 hours, as that can overheat the head.

The repeated "Paper Out" message after blank printing often appears because the printer expects printed data feedback but detects none, which can happen if the head does not fire. So focus on three areas: printhead seating, mainboard driver chip integrity, and mainboard fuse continuity.

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. Therefore, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility at BCH Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Due to high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we can accept your printer for drop-off. Our services are structured to repair either a complete printer or specific components with clear procedural guidance. However, we understand that our rates may not be the most economical, so we strongly recommend self-help research first.
