Epson WF-2630 Ribbon Cable Broke After Printhead Swap: ET-8550 FFC Video Confusion, and Can an ET-2000 Be Converted to a CISS?

Question
I watched your video about fixing the Epson ET-8550 scanner and control panel FFC cables fast, but my situation is different. I replaced the printhead in an Epson WF-2630 that was converted to a sublimation CISS tank, and during the process I broke one of the three ribbon/FFC cables. I searched your items on eBay (do you have a website?) and couldn't find the ribbon cable I need, and honestly I don't want to disassemble the entire printer just to replace a cable.
So instead, I bought your Epson ET-2000, but I'm not happy about losing my sublimation CISS setup. Is it possible to convert the ET-2000 further into a CISS?
Answer
1) Why the ET-8550 "FFC cable fast fix" video doesn't match the WF-2630 situation
You're absolutely right to pause here. The Epson WF-2630 and Epson ET-8550 are built very differently internally.
-
The ET-8550 video focuses on scanner/control panel FFC (flat flexible) cables and their common failure points in that model family.
-
The WF-2630 uses a different internal layout, different cable lengths, different connector styles (and often different pin counts), and the ribbon routing is not the same.
So even though both printers contain "FFC/ribbon cables," the WF-2630 cables are not interchangeable with ET-8550 cables, and the ET-8550 repair shortcut typically won't apply to the WF-2630.
2) Why a broken WF-2630 ribbon cable is such a big deal
On the WF-2630 series, those three ribbon/FFC cables often serve critical communication pathways-commonly things like:
-
Carriage/printhead signals (data lines)
-
Encoder/sensor signals
-
Control panel/scanner signals (depending on which cable broke)
When an FFC is damaged, you may see symptoms like:
-
Printer powers on but won't initialize
-
Carriage won't move / carriage slams
-
"Scanner error" type behavior
-
Blank or unresponsive control panel
-
Constant reboot loop
Sometimes these failures can trigger error messages, but many times the printer won't give a meaningful code-it just fails to complete startup because a key communication line is missing.
3) Do we have a website (besides eBay)?
Yes-our website is BCH Technologies (https://bchtechnologies.com).
That said, with ribbon/FFC cables specifically, availability is tricky because Epson uses many variations even inside the same "series," and sometimes a cable is only identifiable by:
-
Printed part number on the ribbon itself
-
Exact length and contact orientation
-
Connector pitch and pin count
So if you didn't find the WF-2630 ribbon cable on eBay, it doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't exist-it often means the part is not commonly stocked, not commonly requested, or not easy to list accurately without the exact ribbon ID.
4) Why replacing a WF-2630 ribbon cable usually requires "too much disassembly"
Unfortunately, your instinct is correct: in many WF models, Epson routes ribbons through tight chassis paths, around hinges, and under multiple plastic and metal layers. That's why ribbon replacement often feels like you have to take the whole machine apart-because, in practice, you nearly do.
Even experienced techs don't love these jobs because:
-
The cable routing is time-consuming
-
Locking tabs on FFC connectors are delicate
-
One small misalignment can cause another failure
-
It's easy to pinch the replacement cable during reassembly
So your decision to pivot to another printer rather than do a deep tear-down is completely understandable.
5) Can the Epson ET-2000 be "further converted" to a CISS?
This is the key point: the ET-2000 is already a CISS-style printer from the factory. Epson's EcoTank line (like the ET-2000) uses a built-in continuous ink supply system (CIS/CISS)-meaning the printer already has tanks and ink delivery lines designed for continuous feeding.
So when you ask if it can be converted "further into a CISS," the practical answer is:
-
It doesn't need a traditional external CISS, because the EcoTank is already that concept-just integrated neatly into the printer.
-
Instead of installing an external CISS, most users simply fill the EcoTank reservoirs with sublimation ink and dedicate the printer to sublimation use.
6) The real sublimation concern: switching ink types and dedication
If your goal is sublimation, the real workflow change isn't "CISS vs non-CISS"-it's:
-
Dedicating the ET-2000 to sublimation ink only
-
Avoiding mixing ink types (especially if any OEM ink has been used)
-
Printing regularly to keep nozzles healthy (sublimation ink can be less forgiving if neglected)
If the ET-2000 is new and hasn't been used with OEM ink much (or at all), it's usually a straightforward transition to fill with sublimation ink and run.
If the printer already ran OEM ink for a while, a more careful transition is needed to reduce color contamination and performance issues.
7) About error codes
In your message, you didn't mention a specific Epson error code number (for example, codes like 0x97, 0xE8, etc.). In ribbon/FFC damage cases, the printer may not always show a clean code-sometimes it simply fails startup. If you ever do see a code on the WF-2630 (or ET-2000), that code would help narrow whether the ribbon you broke was tied to carriage/printhead initialization versus scanner/control panel signaling.
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. So, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, step-by-step repair suggestions, or direct support for printer repairs. We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility: Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so it may take a few weeks before we can schedule a drop-off. Our services are structured to repair either a whole printer or specific parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. However, we acknowledge our rates aren't the most economical. For that reason, we strongly recommend self-help through online research first. You can start by checking YouTube or visiting our YouTube channel homepage at BCH Technologies on YouTube (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Look for specific videos using the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar. I receive dozens of questions every day asking if we have videos for specific topics, and after creating videos over the past nine years, it's difficult to remember every single one-so using YouTube's search is the most efficient approach. As a bonus, YouTube may also suggest relevant videos from other channels that can help.
Thank you again for reaching out and for supporting BCH Technologies. We truly appreciate it, and I hope the ET-2000 setup gets you back to printing with much less hassle than the WF-2630 ribbon repair would have required.
