Question:
After multiple cleanings, they were still clogged so that I will change the printhead on my Epson Stylus SX-105. The repair manual states some calibration values must be written to the EPROM, such as for calibrating diesel injectors. Unfortunately, I don’t have the program to adjust this step. Please advise on some actions I can take. Also, I am thinking of getting an Epson ET8550 soon, and if using OEM ink with aftermarket waste ink reservoirs or chips installed (always on the original chips, always live OEM), if that combo will keep the ET8550 in service for a long time?
Answer:
You have an Epson Stylus SX-105, and when replacing the printhead, the service manual says you need to write a calibration value to the EPROM. Similar to this process is the calibration of diesel injectors. Although this seems like a complex process, it may already be done by most users searching the “SX-105 Adjustment Program” by searching the Internet. In our experience, a full re-calibration is often unnecessary unless something has gone catastrophically awry with printhead installation. The SX-105 can be hard to find a printhead for, so make sure to source a compatible printhead!
As for error indications during this process, some users display calibration error codes (like E01 or E02 codes, depending on the model and firmware, etc.) if the calibration value is not written correctly. However, these errors are generally rare if the proper procedures are followed.
Let's take it a step up with the Epson ET8550, which we have found to be a workhorse of a printer. With good maintenance (via OEM ink and aftermarket waste ink reservoirs or chips, should you select), you should be able to extract years of absolutely trouble-free printing. One such helpful tool is the waste tank resetter, which enables you to reset the waste tank chip instead of changing it completely. You may view our waste tank resetter here). This tool has saved many users money by avoiding unnecessary purchases for the maintenance parts of their printers.
