Question
I recently bought a BCH FFC cable for my Epson L8180 (which is the same as the ET-8550 in the U.S.). After installing it, the printer now shows error code 31006. I watched the YouTube tutorial, but I had trouble bending the flat cable correctly and accidentally broke one of the pins. I purchased two cable sets, so I still have another one available.
I need help installing it correctly. Do you sell cables that are already bent and ready to install? Is there an easier guide, diagram, or marking to identify where each cable goes on the connectors such as CN40, CN41, CN42, and CN43? I'm also unsure which cable is the short one and which one is the long one.
Answer
First, to answer your compatibility question: yes, the Epson L8180 and Epson ET-8550 use the same cable configuration. Epson sells these models under different regional names, but the internal hardware-including the mainboard and the carriage cables-is essentially identical. So the BCH FFC cable kit you purchased is the correct one for your printer.
About Our BCH FFC Cable Kits
Our cables are already bundled, folded, and prepared for installation. We intentionally pre-shape them to make the routing process easier compared to raw flat cables. However, the installation still requires careful routing because the carriage assembly moves during printing, and the cable must fold correctly without tension or twisting.
Unfortunately, we do not pre-label the cables for connectors such as CN40, CN41, CN42, and CN43, because Epson boards sometimes vary slightly between revisions. Instead, the best method is to follow the cable routing shown in the video.
You can see the section that explains how to determine the correct cable placement at 16:25 in this video:
Epson ET-8550 Cable Installation Guide (https://youtu.be/oYL_2o9eImY)
This part of the video shows how to visually trace the cable length and determine which cable should connect to each mainboard connector.
Understanding Error Code 31006
The 31006 error code on the Epson ET-8550/L8180 is commonly related to carriage communication issues or carriage motor circuit problems. In many repair cases, this error appears after:
-
A damaged FFC cable
-
A broken cable pin
-
Incorrect cable routing
-
Loose connections at the carriage board or mainboard
-
A partially inserted cable in the connector
Because you mentioned that one of the pins broke, this is very likely the cause of the 31006 error. Even a single damaged trace on the flat cable can interrupt the communication between the carriage board and the mainboard.
Identifying the Short and Long Cables
In the ET-8550/L8180 cable set, the cables are slightly different lengths to match the distance from the carriage to the motherboard connectors.
In general:
-
The shortest cable typically connects to the nearest connector on the mainboard.
-
The longest cable connects to the connector farthest from the cable exit path.
When routing the cable bundle:
-
Start by inserting the cables into the carriage board first.
-
Route the cable through the original plastic cable guide path.
-
Slide the carriage left and right manually to confirm the cable folds naturally.
-
Connect each cable to the motherboard once the routing looks correct.
The correct routing allows the cable to form a smooth S-shaped fold when the carriage moves.
Important Installation Tips
Here are several tips that can prevent damage when installing FFC cables:
1. Do not crease the cable sharply
FFC cables should have gentle curves rather than tight folds.
2. Make sure the connector locks are open
Many Epson connectors have a small flip-lock or slide lock that must be opened before inserting the cable.
3. Insert the cable straight
The gold contacts should sit fully inside the connector before closing the latch.
4. Verify the exposed contacts direction
Some connectors require the contacts facing up, while others require them facing down.
5. Test carriage movement manually
Move the carriage slowly across the rail to confirm the cable does not snag or tighten.
What Happens If the Cable Is Installed Incorrectly
If the cable is installed incorrectly or damaged, the printer may show errors such as:
-
31006 - Carriage communication error
-
Carriage initialization failure
-
Printer stopping during startup
-
Printhead not moving
Replacing the damaged cable with your second spare cable and carefully routing it again will likely resolve the issue.
Addressing printer issues can be complicated because most problems involve hands-on mechanical work. Unfortunately, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting or live repair support. However, we do offer in-person diagnostic and repair services through our facility, which you can learn about here: BCH Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Due to strong demand, repairs are handled on a first-come, first-served basis, and there may be a waiting period of a few weeks before a printer can be dropped off.
Our services allow customers to send in either the entire printer or specific components, and we provide clear instructions for the process. That said, we understand that professional repair may not always be the most economical solution. For that reason, we strongly recommend exploring self-repair resources online.
A good starting point is our YouTube channel homepage: BCH Technologies YouTube Channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Once there, you can use the search icon next to the "About" tab on the right side of the menu bar to find videos related to your printer model or repair topic. I receive dozens of questions every day asking whether we have a video covering a specific issue. Since we've produced hundreds of videos over the past nine years, it's difficult to remember every single one. Using YouTube's search feature is usually the fastest way to find relevant content. In addition, YouTube may also suggest helpful videos from other creators that could assist with the repair.
Thanks again for reaching out to us and for your support of BCH Technologies. We truly appreciate it and wish you the best of luck with your installation and repair.
