Epson L1800 DTF Printer Stops Printing After Firmware Update - Possible Mainboard, Fuse, or Printhead Issues

Question:
I have an L1800 DTF printer that stopped printing after a firmware update. The printer behaves like it's printing, but no ink comes out. I checked the motherboard and noticed two black and red wires connected to batteries with connectors to the printer. I also couldn't find the F1 or F2 fuse on the motherboard. Is it possible to send a picture of my board, and what do you think the issue might be?
Answer:
Based on your description, your Epson L1800 DTF printer showing "printing" behavior without actually laying down ink-especially after a firmware update-can point to several possible issues. Let's go through the most likely causes:
1. Blown F1/F2 Fuse (Even if Not Visible)
On many L1800 boards, the F1 or F2 fuse protects the printhead circuit. If this fuse is blown, the printer can still go through the motions of printing, but no voltage reaches the printhead-resulting in no ink output.
In your case, since you mentioned that the fuse is not visible, your board may have:
-
A bypass fuse design, or
-
A surface-mounted fuse integrated into the circuit, making it harder to identify
A blown fuse is still highly likely, especially if something went wrong during the firmware update or power cycle.
You can check or replace the fuse here:

2. Burnt Printhead Driver Chip
Another very common issue is a damaged driver IC (integrated circuit) on the motherboard. This chip controls firing signals to the printhead. If it's burnt or damaged:
-
The printer may behave normally
-
But the printhead will not receive firing signals
This can happen due to:
-
Electrical surges
-
Firmware incompatibility
-
Short circuits in the printhead

3. Printhead Clogging (Very Common with DTF Ink)
DTF ink is thicker than standard ink, which makes clogging a frequent issue-especially if the printer sat idle during or after the firmware update.
Here's a safe method to manually check and recover flow:
-
Turn the printer on and let the printhead park naturally on the capping station
-
Attach a syringe with tubing to the waste line
-
Gently draw 4-6 ml of air first
-
If you feel slight resistance, that's normal
-
If you only draw air → printhead not sealed or cap station leaking
-
If fully blocked → capping station may be clogged
-
-
Once flow begins:
-
Slowly draw to around 2 ml mark
-
Hold for about 10 seconds
-
Then run a standard cleaning cycle
-
⚠️ Avoid:
-
Strong cleaning within 12 hours
-
Back-to-back cleaning cycles (this can overheat the head)
4. Firmware Update Side Effects
Firmware updates can sometimes:
-
Disable third-party ink configurations
-
Interrupt communication between the board and printhead
-
Cause voltage inconsistencies if interrupted mid-update
This doesn't always directly damage hardware-but it can expose underlying weaknesses (like a borderline fuse or chip).
