Epson ET-8550 Black Ink Not Printing After Cartridge Change - Troubleshooting Guide

Question:
My Epson ET-8550 was printing fine until I replaced the black ink. After that, the black stopped working. I left the printer unused for a few weeks, then ran a couple of printhead cleanings, but it didn't help. I tried using printhead cleaning solution and pushed it through the dampers-it came out, and I briefly got it to work, but then nothing printed again. I also ran more cleanings, including one or two power cleanings, to prime the dampers. I even followed a video tutorial on pulling and releasing to remove air bubbles from the dampers, which worked for one color but not the others. Now the printer won't print anything. What can I do?
Answer:
-
Initial Symptom - Black Ink Stopped After Cartridge Change
-
It's common for air to enter the ink system when swapping cartridges, especially if the cartridge was not fully primed or seated.
-
Air in the ink lines or dampers can block ink delivery, leading to the "no print" condition even when the printhead itself is not clogged.
-
-
Effect of Leaving the Printer Idle
-
When left unused for several weeks, pigment black ink in Epson printers can dry quickly, worsening clogs.
-
In your case, the problem may have started as an airlock but evolved into a combination of air bubbles and partial clogging.
-
-
Cleaning Solution and Dampers
-
Pushing cleaning solution through the dampers can temporarily restore flow, but if not done carefully, it can also push air deeper into the lines or damage the damper membranes.
-
The fact that one color responded and others didn't suggests that air is still trapped in some ink channels, or that clogs remain in the printhead nozzles.
-
-
Multiple Cleanings and Power Cleanings
-
Epson's standard cleanings use moderate suction, while power cleaning applies strong suction. Running too many power cleanings can:
-
Overfill the waste ink pad.
-
Further de-prime the system if air is present (causing worse ink starvation).
-
Risk burning out the printhead if no ink reaches it, since the nozzles rely on ink for cooling.
-
-
-
Why Nothing Prints Now
-
At this point, it's likely the entire ink delivery system has lost prime. With air in multiple lines, the printer may fail to pull ink altogether.
-
In severe cases, repeated dry firing can damage the printhead, causing permanent nozzle failure.

Steps to Try Before Replacing Parts
-
Manual Priming: Remove the dampers and use a syringe with tubing to gently draw ink from the cartridge side until you see a solid ink flow (no bubbles). Then reinstall the dampers and run one cleaning cycle.
-
Check Ink Lines: Look for visible air gaps in the ink tubes. If large air pockets remain, the system must be re-primed manually.
-
Limit Power Cleanings: Avoid repeated power cleanings-they often worsen the issue. Instead, focus on restoring prime through manual intervention.
-
Test With Cleaning Solution: If cleaning solution flows correctly through the printhead nozzles but ink does not, the problem is in the supply system (dampers, cartridges, or airlocks), not the head itself.
-
-
When to Suspect Permanent Damage
-
If after re-priming you still cannot get ink to print, the nozzles may have overheated and burned out. In that case, the only solution is printhead replacement.

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated process because they require hands-on repair and physical inspection. For that reason, we are not able to provide remote troubleshooting or direct repair support. However, we do offer an in-person diagnostic and repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Please note this service is first-come, first-served, and due to high demand, it can take a few weeks before your printer is processed. We repair both entire machines and individual parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. That said, our pricing is not always the most economical option, so many users choose to research and attempt self-repair. A great place to start is our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Use the search icon next to the "About" tab to find videos on Epson ET-8550 ink flow troubleshooting, or explore related repair content suggested by YouTube.
Thank you again for reaching out with your question. Your support means a lot to us, and we hope this guidance helps you get closer to restoring your ET-8550 to full function.
