Customer Question:
I just purchased your files and tried printing them on my Epson ET-2850, but it wouldn't print correctly-whether as TIFF or JPG. After some attempts, I managed to print a JPEG, but the results are very strange. Magenta printed after a couple of tries but has thin white lines. When I tried printing a yellow bar, it came out as a faint magenta instead. A four-color test showed black printing fine, magenta darker but still streaky, and both cyan and yellow appearing as faint magenta. This is very unusual. We don't print in color often, so I suspect clogged nozzles. I've already run nozzle cleaning and head cleaning, and now I'm trying a power cleaning cycle. Can you explain what's going on and how to fix it?
Answer:
Based on your description, this is not a file format issue (TIFF vs JPG). The behavior you're seeing-incorrect colors, missing channels, and banding (white lines)-points strongly to a printhead ink delivery problem, not a software or image issue.
Let's break down what's happening:
1. Why Yellow and Cyan Are Printing as Magenta
When yellow and cyan both appear as faint magenta, it usually means:
-
Yellow and cyan nozzles are clogged or not firing at all
-
The printer is only able to lay down magenta ink, so everything shifts toward that color
This is a classic symptom of partial or severe nozzle blockage.
2. White Lines in Magenta (Banding)
The thin white lines in magenta indicate:
-
Partial clogging in the magenta nozzle array
-
Some nozzles are firing, others are blocked
This is why magenta appears but is inconsistent.
3. Black Printing Normally
This tells us:
-
The black channel is healthy
-
The issue is isolated to the color channels (CMY)
4. Most Likely Root Causes
Given that you mentioned low color usage, the most common causes are:
-
Dried ink in the printhead nozzles (very common if color isn't used regularly)
-
Air bubbles in the ink lines
-
Ink separation or settling in tanks
-
Partial clogging in the dampers or printhead channels
5. About the Power Cleaning Cycle
You're on the right track running a power cleaning (Power Ink Flushing), but here are a few important notes:
-
Power cleaning can help pull fresh ink through clogged channels
-
However, it consumes a large amount of ink
-
You may need 2-3 cycles (with rest periods) to see improvement
-
Always wait 10-15 minutes between cycles to avoid overheating the printhead
6. Recommended Step-by-Step Fix
Step 1: Print a Nozzle Check Pattern
-
This will confirm exactly which channels are missing (C, M, Y)
-
Look for:
-
Missing lines (clogs)
-
Broken patterns (partial flow)
-
Step 2: Run 2-3 Standard Head Cleanings
-
Wait a few minutes between each cleaning
-
Check nozzle pattern after each
Step 3: Perform 1-2 Power Cleanings (if needed)
-
Only if standard cleaning doesn't improve results
-
Allow rest time between cycles
Step 4: Gently Agitate Ink Tanks
-
If using refill ink, pigments/dyes may settle
-
Lightly swirl (do NOT shake aggressively)
Step 5: Print Color Blocks Regularly
-
After cleaning, print solid CMY blocks to keep ink flowing
7. If the Problem Persists
If after multiple cleaning cycles:
-
Yellow and cyan still print as magenta
-
Nozzle check shows missing channels
Then the issue may be:
-
Severe clog in the printhead
-
Airlock in ink lines
-
Damper or internal ink flow restriction
At that point, cleaning cycles alone may not be enough, and manual intervention (such as printhead flushing) may be required.
Addressing printer issues can sometimes become quite complex due to the hands-on nature of the underlying problems. As such, we're unable to provide remote troubleshooting, detailed repair guidance, or step-by-step disassembly support. However, we do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility.
