Epson ET-2720 Stuck on Logo Screen: Causes, Fixes, and Firmware Recovery Options

Question:
My Epson ET-2720 printer powers on and shows the Epson logo, but it never goes past that point. After displaying the logo, I hear a humming sound from the scanner for a few seconds, and then the printer restarts itself repeatedly. I've already tried replacing the scanner assembly, but the issue persists. What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

Answer:

When your Epson ET-2720 only shows the logo and restarts repeatedly, it's typically a firmware or EEPROM corruption issue rather than a hardware failure. This means that the printer's internal memory, which stores operational data and firmware, has become corrupted or unreadable-causing it to crash during startup.

Step 1: Restart the Printer in Service Mode

Try to boot your printer into service or recovery mode. This special mode allows the printer to accept firmware updates even when it's stuck in a boot loop.

  • Turn off the printer completely.

  • Hold down the Stop, Left Arrow, and Power buttons simultaneously.

  • Keep holding until the screen displays "Firmware Update Mode" or a similar message.
If your printer successfully enters this mode, connect it to your computer using a USB cable.

Step 2: Reinstall or Overwrite the Firmware

Once in service mode, use Epson's recovery firmware utility to reinstall or overwrite the existing firmware. This can sometimes repair corrupted data that causes the boot loop.

  • Download the latest firmware for your ET-2720 model from Epson's official support site.

  • Run the firmware recovery tool and follow the on-screen prompts to flash the firmware to your printer.

If this method fails or the printer doesn't stay in service mode, proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Use WICReset Software to Roll Back Firmware

Some firmware updates (especially automatic ones from Epson) can cause corruption. The WICReset utility can help roll back or reinstall stable firmware versions.

  • Download and install WICReset software.

  • Connect your printer via USB.

  • Use the tool to either roll back the firmware or reset the EEPROM section that stores startup data.

Step 4: Reprogram or Replace the EEPROM Chip

If the first two options don't work, the EEPROM chip on your printer's mainboard may be physically corrupted. This chip holds the core firmware, and when damaged, it causes endless reboot cycles like the one you're experiencing.
To fix this:

  • Search online for a binary dump file (often called bin dump + model number). BCH Technologies offers resources and downloads that can help with this process.

  • You can build or buy an EEPROM programmer-a small device that connects to your computer via USB and lets you rewrite data directly onto the chip.

  • If reprogramming doesn't help, replacing the EEPROM chip itself is the best long-term fix. Replacement chips are affordable and available on marketplaces like Amazon or eBay.

Sometimes, overwriting the corrupted EEPROM temporarily allows the printer to function again because the firmware is written into a "good region" of the memory. However, if corruption reoccurs, full replacement is the most stable solution.
