Epson ET-15000 Not Printing After Sitting Idle - No Ink Output and Damper Removal Issue Explained

Question:
I have an Epson ET-15000 that I use for sublimation printing. It hasn't been used in about three months. Now, when I try to print, the pages come out completely blank-no ink at all. I've tried nozzle checks and print head cleanings, but still nothing prints. The printer required me to replace the maintenance tank before doing a power cleaning, which I did. After waiting 15 hours, I ran the power cleaning, but still no ink is coming out.
I also watched your videos about priming dampers and tried to follow along. However, when I attempt to lift the dampers, they won't come out fully. Even after removing the screws shown, they only lift slightly, and most won't budge at all. I've attached photos to show how far they move. Am I missing something?
Answer:
Why Your Epson ET-15000 Is Printing Blank Pages
When a printer sits unused for several months-especially with sublimation ink-there are a few common causes for complete loss of ink output:
1. Severe Printhead Drying / Clogging
Sublimation ink tends to settle and dry faster than standard ink. After 3 months of inactivity, it's very likely that:
-
The printhead nozzles are completely clogged
-
Ink cannot pass through at all, resulting in totally blank pages (no faint lines, just clean paper)
Even multiple cleanings or a power cleaning may not resolve this if the clog is severe.
2. Air Locked Ink System
Another very common issue is air entering the ink lines or dampers:
-
If air replaces ink inside the dampers, the printhead receives no ink
-
This results in nozzle checks showing absolutely nothing
Power cleaning sometimes helps, but if the air pocket is too large, it won't fully reprime the system.
3. Ink Not Reaching the Printhead
After long inactivity:
-
Ink lines can partially dry or separate
-
Dampers may lose prime
-
Internal pressure system may fail to pull ink forward
About the Maintenance Tank and Power Cleaning
You did the right thing replacing the maintenance tank. The ET-15000 requires this before allowing a power cleaning cycle, which is a deeper cleaning process. However:
-
Power cleaning cannot fix severe clogs or air locks in all cases
-
It also consumes a lot of ink, so repeated attempts aren't recommended
Why You Can't Remove the Dampers
This is actually a key part of your issue.
Epson printers use three different damper locking designs, and your ET-15000 uses the type that can be tricky if you're expecting the wrong mechanism.
Your Model: Front Tab Locking Damper
On your ET-15000:
-
The dampers are secured by a small plastic tab located at the front (facing away from you)
-
Simply removing screws is not enough
To release the damper:
-
Locate the front locking tab
-
Gently push the tab inward
-
While holding it, lift the damper upward
If you skip pressing the tab:
-
The damper will only lift slightly (exactly what you're experiencing)
-
Forcing it can damage the ink inlet or printhead manifold
Other Damper Types (for clarity):
-
Bottom-lock dampers (shown in some videos): release from underneath
-
Metal bracket dampers (like ET-8550): secured by a metal clip
This is why the video didn't perfectly match your experience-your printer uses a different locking system.
What You Should Do Next
Once you successfully remove the dampers:
Step 1: Check Ink Inside Dampers
-
Are they full of ink or mostly air?
-
If empty or bubbly → confirms air lock issue
Step 2: Prime the Dampers
-
Use a syringe to gently pull ink through the damper
-
Make sure each damper is fully filled with ink (no air gaps)
Step 3: Reinstall Dampers Carefully
-
Seat them firmly back into the printhead
-
Ensure proper seal (critical for ink flow)
Step 4: Perform a Cleaning Cycle
-
After priming, run 1-2 standard cleanings (not power cleaning immediately)
If There's Still No Ink After Priming
Then the issue is likely:
-
Severely clogged printhead, or
-
Internal ink pathway blockage
At that point, you may need:
-
Manual printhead cleaning (flush solution)
-
Or printhead replacement (in worst cases)
Important Warning
Avoid excessive power cleanings:
-
They can overfill waste ink pads
-
Waste a large amount of ink
-
Still fail if the system isn't properly primed
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated, hands-on process due to the mechanical and fluid systems involved. Because of this, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting or step-by-step repair guidance beyond general recommendations. However, we do offer an in-person diagnostic and repair service through our local facility. You can learn more here: printer repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Please note that due to high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we can accept your printer.
Our services cover both full printer repairs and individual component fixes, with clear instructions provided. That said, we understand our services may not be the most budget-friendly option, so we strongly encourage exploring self-help resources first.
