Epson EcoTank ET-2760 Magenta Ink Stops Printing After Head Cleaning: Causes, Fixes, and Waste Ink Pad Concerns

Question
I have an Epson EcoTank ET-2760 printer. After running head cleanings, the printer works for a while, but then the magenta color stops printing again. All other colors print fine. I'm also trying to understand issues related to resetting the waste ink pad. What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?
Answer
Why Magenta Works Temporarily, Then Stops
When a single color-especially magenta-prints briefly after a head cleaning and then disappears again, it usually points to an ink delivery problem rather than a software issue. Common causes include:
-
Partial Clog in the Printhead
Magenta ink is particularly prone to drying and pigment separation. A head cleaning can temporarily push ink through a partially clogged nozzle, but once printing stops, the clog reforms. -
Air in the Ink Line
If air is trapped in the magenta ink line, head cleaning can briefly move ink forward. However, once that ink is used up, air replaces it, and printing stops again. -
Weak or Failing Printhead Channel
Over time, the magenta channel inside the printhead can degrade. This often shows up exactly as you described-temporary recovery followed by failure. -
Damper or Ink Supply Restriction
Inside EcoTank printers, ink flow relies on gravity and internal dampers. If the magenta damper is restricted or failing, it won't maintain consistent ink flow.
Head Cleaning vs. Power Cleaning
Repeated standard head cleanings can increase waste ink rapidly without fully resolving deeper ink flow problems. On the ET-2760, excessive cleanings may push you closer to a waste ink pad limit, which can eventually trigger a service-related stop.
If the printer reaches this limit, you may see errors such as:
-
"Service Required"
-
"A printer's ink pad is at the end of its service life"
These messages are tied to the waste ink counter, not directly to print quality-but excessive cleanings can accelerate reaching this limit.
About Resetting the Waste Ink Pad
Resetting the waste ink counter does not fix printing issues like missing magenta. It only clears the internal counter that tracks how much waste ink the printer believes has been absorbed.
Important points to understand:
-
Resetting the counter without physically servicing or replacing the waste ink pads can lead to ink leakage.
-
The waste ink system is separate from the magenta ink delivery path.
-
A reset is only relevant if you are receiving a waste ink-related error message.
So while waste ink resets are often discussed online, they are not a solution for intermittent color loss.
Practical Steps You Can Try
If you are attempting self-repair, these steps are commonly effective for this specific symptom:
-
Perform a manual printhead soak (not just software cleaning).
-
Inspect and re-prime the magenta ink line to remove air.
-
Print frequent magenta-heavy test patterns to keep ink flowing.
-
Avoid excessive head cleanings, as they increase waste ink without guaranteed results.
If magenta still drops out after these steps, the issue is very likely internal to the printhead, which unfortunately is not user-repairable on this model.
Addressing printer issues can be complicated due to the hands-on nature of the problems involved. Because of this, we're unable to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or step-by-step support for printer repairs. However, we do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility: Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Due to high demand, repairs are handled on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we're able to accept your printer for drop-off.
Our services are structured to repair either an entire printer or specific components, with clear instructions provided for each option. That said, we understand our rates may not be the most economical for everyone. For this reason, we strongly encourage self-help through online research. A great place to start is YouTube-especially our own channel homepage at BCH Technologies on YouTube (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). You can use the search icon next to the "About" section on the right-hand side of the menu bar to locate videos on very specific topics. I receive dozens of questions every day asking if I've made a video on a certain issue, and after more than nine years of creating content, it's nearly impossible to remember every single one. Using YouTube's built-in search tool is the fastest and most effective approach, and it may also recommend helpful videos from other creators.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact us and for supporting BCH Technologies. We truly appreciate your trust and engagement, and we wish you the best of luck in resolving your printer issue.
