DTF Printer White Ink Button Stuck? Troubleshooting Uninet 1000 / DTF Pro Model J Printing Interruptions

Question:
I watched your video on making DTF printheads last longer using color rotation, and it was incredibly helpful. However, I'm running into an issue: while printing, the white ink button suddenly lights up. When I press it multiple times (4-5 times), the printer doesn't resume printing. The only way to get it working again is to power it off, after which it performs an automatic head cleaning and then prints normally. I'm using a Uninet 1000 (same as DTF Pro Model J). Are there any settings I can adjust to fix this?

Answer:

Based on your description, this issue is not related to normal settings or user configuration-it points to a hardware-level fault, specifically involving the printer's mainboard (motherboard).

What's Happening Behind the Scenes

The behavior you're experiencing-where:

  • The white ink button lights up unexpectedly

  • Pressing it multiple times does nothing

  • The printer only resumes after a power cycle and automatic head cleaning

-strongly indicates that the printer is losing communication with the printhead or failing to properly recognize it during operation.

This is typically caused by a corrupted EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) on the mainboard.

Why EEPROM Matters

The EEPROM stores critical data such as:

  • Printhead ID and calibration data

  • Ink channel configuration (including white ink control)

  • Operational states during printing

If part of this memory becomes corrupted:

  • The printer may forget the printhead mid-job

  • It may trigger false alerts, such as activating the white ink button

  • It may fail to resume printing properly, even when prompted

This explains why a restart temporarily fixes the issue-the printer reinitializes and reloads the printhead data, allowing printing to continue until the fault occurs again.

Why Pressing the White Ink Button Doesn't Work

Normally, the white ink button is used for:

  • White ink circulation

  • Maintenance or priming cycles

However, in your case, the printer is not responding because the issue is not operational-it's logical (firmware/hardware-level). The system is essentially stuck in an error state that cannot be cleared manually.

Is There a Setting You Can Change?

Unfortunately, no setting adjustment will fix this issue. Since the problem originates from corrupted memory on the mainboard:

  • Software resets won't resolve it

  • Firmware settings won't override it

  • Maintenance cycles won't stabilize it

Recommended Solution

The only reliable fix is:

  • Replace the mainboard

In some rare cases, technicians may attempt to:

  • Reflash firmware

  • Reprogram EEPROM

However, these approaches are often temporary or unsuccessful if the memory chip itself is degraded.

As we sometimes say bluntly in the repair world-you can try to "beat the board to death" with resets and power cycles, but ultimately, replacement is the real solution.

Important Note on Model Compatibility

Since the Uninet 1000 and DTF Pro Model J are essentially the same platform:

  • You can often source compatible mainboards from either ecosystem

  • Just ensure firmware compatibility when replacing

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. So, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we can accept your printer for drop-off. Our services are structured to repair either a full printer or specific components, with clear guidance on how to proceed. That said, we understand our rates may not be the most budget-friendly, so we strongly encourage exploring self-help resources online. A great place to start is YouTube, including our channel homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Use the search icon next to the "About" tab to find videos on your specific issue.
