Question:
I have a problem with my DTF machine. When I press the cleaning button, it performs the cleaning cycle properly. But when I press the test button, the printhead moves across, stops, and then moves back without printing the test strip. The printhead doesn't appear to be clogged, so I'm unsure what the issue could be. Can you help?
Answer:
Now, regarding your issue: based on your description and the video you provided, your printer displayed several key messages:
-
"System is initialized."
-
"Failed to print; the PASS data printing was unfinished."
-
"Failed to print; The action when executing PASS failed."
-
"Failed to print; Print initialization error."
These error messages indicate that the printer successfully completes its initial startup but fails during the actual printing command. This sequence typically points to a communication failure between the mainboard and the printhead board. While the printer might appear ready to print, the control signals for executing the test pattern aren't being properly transmitted.
There are a few possible causes to consider:
-
Unstable Communication Connection:
Many DTF printers use either FFC (Flat Flexible Cable) or optical fiber connections between the mainboard and the head board. Over time, vibration, heat, or handling can cause these connectors to loosen slightly, leading to intermittent communication. Even if the cable looks fine visually, reseating or replacing it often resolves the problem. -
Improper Cable Seating or Damaged FFC:
Check whether the cable connecting the mainboard to the printhead board is firmly and evenly inserted. If you notice any creases, burn marks, or wear near the connectors, replace the FFC cable. A partially broken trace inside the ribbon can cause the printer to initialize correctly but fail when attempting to send complex print data. -
Corrupted Print Command or Software Issue:
Although less common, the error can also occur if the printer's software or driver fails to properly send the print command. Restart your RIP software and printer, then try again with a basic test pattern. -
Printhead Board or Mainboard Issue:
If all cables are secure and clean, there might be a deeper electronic fault within either the head board or mainboard. Diagnosing this requires testing with a known working replacement board-something best done in a service environment.
Because DTF printers are highly integrated systems, even a small connection issue can interrupt signal flow and trigger "PASS data unfinished" or "print initialization error" messages.
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. We're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. However, we offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we can examine your printer once it's dropped off. Our services are structured to repair either the whole printer or specific components, with clear guidance on how to proceed.
That said, our service rates may not always be the most economical. For users comfortable with hands-on repair, we recommend exploring self-help options on YouTube, starting with our BCH Technologies channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). You can search for specific topics using the search icon beside "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar. With nearly a decade's worth of tutorials, it's the fastest way to locate videos addressing your exact issue.
