Question:
I have two HP OfficeJet 8610 all-in-one printers. After watching your YouTube videos, I was planning to order the 4-pin cable and possibly a replacement motherboard. However, I noticed these parts aren't in stock. One printer was working fine until it developed an ink cartridge issue that I managed to fix, but now it's making a strange noise near the printhead carriage. I'm unsure how to adjust the leveling wheel shown in your video. Could you tell me how to diagnose the problem or what it might cost to replace the printer?
Answer:
Regarding your HP OfficeJet 8610 printers, unfortunately, we currently don't carry parts for this particular model, including the 4-pin cable or motherboard. The HP 8610 uses proprietary HP components that are not easily interchangeable or sourced through standard third-party channels. That said, I can share some insights to help you better understand what may be happening and what you can try before considering replacement.

Weird Noise from Printhead Carriage:
When you hear an unusual grinding or clicking sound near the printhead, it's often caused by mechanical misalignment in the carriage assembly or dry ink buildup on the encoder strip (the thin transparent ribbon behind the carriage). Try gently cleaning the encoder strip using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. If the noise persists, the carriage belt or drive gear could be worn or misaligned, which can happen over time or after a jam. -
Carriage Leveling Wheel:
The wheel shown in some of our videos is designed to adjust the height and alignment of the printhead carriage. However, HP models like the 8610 have a more enclosed structure, and accessing or adjusting that wheel without proper calibration tools can be risky-it may throw off the printhead alignment and cause further print quality issues. -
Ink Cartridge and Board Issues:
HP's 8610 is particularly sensitive to ink cartridge recognition errors. These are often due to dirty or oxidized contacts on the carriage flex cable or the cartridge chip itself. Cleaning both sides gently with a microfiber cloth can sometimes help. However, if your printer experienced a surge or power issue, the logic board could have failed-unfortunately, HP doesn't provide separate part replacements for these boards, so the most practical solution may be a refurbished unit. -
Replacement Cost and Options:
If diagnostics and cleaning don't resolve the problem, replacing the printer may indeed be more cost-effective than sourcing internal parts. The HP OfficeJet 8610 was discontinued, but its successors-such as the HP OfficeJet Pro 8620 or 8710 series-often provide improved reliability and WiFi connectivity.
