When it comes to building an ICC profile on semi-transparent film, there are a few important factors to consider:
1. Printing Accuracy Before Profiling
Creating an ICC profile requires your printer to produce colors that are at least reasonably close to their intended target. If the output is too far off from the expected colors, the profiling software won't be able to generate an effective correction curve. In other words, the base print needs to be stable and predictable before the ICC profiling process will deliver reliable results.
2. Challenges with Semi-Transparent Media
Semi-transparent films pose a unique challenge because the color patches you print for profiling don't appear as they would on opaque paper. The underlying surface (such as your scanner bed or background) influences the perceived color. This often leads to distorted readings and inaccurate profiles if measured directly from the film.
3. How to Work Around This Limitation

Use a White Backing: If the print is staying on the film (e.g., for display or direct application), placing a consistent white background behind the film during the profiling scan can help stabilize color readings. This simulates an opaque base and reduces the variability caused by transparency.

For Transfer Applications (like DTF): If your final product is transferred to fabric or another surface, it's better to scan the transferred output rather than the film itself. This way, the ICC profile reflects the actual appearance of the final print on its true medium, not just the intermediate film stage.

Make sure your printer's ink density is properly calibrated before attempting ICC creation. Too much or too little ink can throw off color balance.

Use consistent lighting conditions when scanning patches. Any ambient light leaking through the film can skew the measurement.

If possible, perform multiple test scans with and without backing to compare results. This helps determine which method produces a more reliable and repeatable profile.
