Question:
I'm using a Canon TS-302 printer, and it won't print-just a blinking yellow light. How can I disable the ink monitor so I can continue printing?
Answer:
Understanding the Blinking Yellow Light & Ink Monitor Behavior
On Canon TS-series printers like the TS-302, the blinking or steady yellow LED is typically tied to the ink monitoring system. This system is not actually measuring ink levels, but instead uses a page-count-based estimate. Once the printer believes the cartridge is empty, it will stop printing-even if there's still usable ink inside.
There are a few key stages:
1. Low Ink Warning (Steady Yellow Light)
- When the printer reaches about 85% of its estimated usage, the LED becomes steady yellow.
- You may also see a "low ink" message on your computer.
- At this stage, you cannot disable the ink monitor yet.
- ✅ What to do: Ignore the warning and continue printing.
2. Ink Depleted (Error 1686 / 1688)
- Once the counter reaches its limit, the printer will stop and display:
- Error 1686 or 1688: "The following cartridge has run out."
- The LED will typically be blinking yellow, and printing is disabled.
How to Disable the Ink Monitor (Critical Step)
Once you see the 1686/1688 error message, follow these steps:
- Do NOT close the error message window on your computer.
- Go to your printer.
- Press and hold the STOP button (triangle icon) for 5 seconds.
- Release the button.
This action disables the ink monitor for that cartridge, allowing you to continue printing indefinitely.

After disabling:
- The cartridge light will continue blinking yellow-this is normal.
- If the blinking bothers you, you can simply cover it with a small piece of tape.
Important Limitation
You cannot disable the ink monitor before the printer declares the cartridge "empty." This is a built-in Canon restriction. So if you're still seeing a "low ink" warning, just keep printing until the error appears.
Other Possible Issues (If Printer Still Won't Work)
If your printer is not printing even after addressing the ink monitor, here are additional possibilities:
❌ Error 1682 or 1684: Cartridge Not Recognized
These errors mean:
- "The following cartridge is missing or damaged"
- "Check Ink 1682 or 1684"
Possible causes:
- Dirty or contaminated chip contacts
- Cartridge not seated properly
- Damaged or incompatible cartridge
Fixes:
- Remove the cartridge and inspect the gold contact strip (electronic ribbon).
- Clean it gently with a lint-free cloth.
- Reinstall the cartridge firmly-try reseating it a few times.
- If using refilled or modified cartridges, ensure they are not physically altered too much.
⚙️ Cartridge Hard to Install or Feels Stuck
This is a mechanical alignment issue, often seen with aftermarket or modified cartridges.
Tips:
- When installing: lift upward slightly while inserting, not just pushing forward.
- When removing: press down gently before pulling out.
- If resistance is excessive, the cartridge housing or printer cover may need slight adjustment.
In some cases, users lightly sand the underside of the printer cover to improve fit, but this should be done carefully and only if you're confident.
⚠️ Modified (Spongeless) Cartridge Issues
If you've modified your cartridge:
- Over-sanding can make it sit too low, causing poor contact with the printer pins.
- This leads to recognition errors or intermittent failures.
Solution:
- Slightly adjust the cartridge or file the printer cover minimally to restore alignment.
- Ensure smooth insertion and proper chip contact.
