How to Troubleshoot and Repair Power Supply Issues with the Epson XP-7100 Printer

Question

My EPSON XP-7100 was functioning well, especially for photos and scanning. However, it was accidentally plugged the power cord into a 220v socket. Since it was purchased in the US, it's designed for 110v only. Now it won't power on.

  1. Is the printer repairable?
  2. How can we determine if only the power supply is damaged?
  3. Do you have any troubleshooting steps you could recommend?
  4. If it is the power supply, can you ship it abroad? Alternatively, can you ship to a US address, and I’ll have someone deliver it to me?
  5. Should I just purchase a new printer, and what model might replace the XP-7100?

Thank you for contacting us! We at BCH Technologies are grateful for your engagement and support, particularly with regard to our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Your feedback plays a crucial role in further developing our technical expertise.

To address your questions:

  1. Is the printer repairable? It depends. Given that the problem was caused by a power surge, the extent of the damage needs to be assessed. Usually, it only affects the safety mechanism in the power supply, but it can potentially damage the mainboard as well.
  2. Determining if only the power supply is damaged: We have a couple of videos about testing Epson power supplies. For example, this one: Testing Epson Power Supply (https://youtube.com/live/LvQmi_hOhv0). Typically, the ground wire is identifiable by a different color. The hot wire should read around 42v, and the "standby" wire should have a lower voltage, ranging from 3.3v to 5v. If you don't know which wire is ground, you can put the multimeter's black prob on a large surface, such as heat sink. Then you test the pins with the red prob. If you connected ground to ground, you will have very tiny readings. The other two pins will show you 42v and 3.3 to 5v.
  3. Troubleshooting steps: Start with the power supply. Check if it can be repaired or replaced. If replacing the power supply does not resolve the issue, the mainboard might be damaged, which is more complex to troubleshoot and repair.
  4. Shipping the power supply: We can ship the power supply anywhere except to Mexico, Greece, Ukraine, and Russia. You can add the Epson Power Supply for Expression Premium XP-7100 (https://bchtechnologies.com/epson-power-supply-for-expression-premium-xp-7100/) to your cart and check out. Alternatively, we can ship to a US address for you.
  5. Purchasing a new printer: If repair seems too time-consuming or costly, considering a new purchase might be wise. For a replacement, I recommend any model from the Epson EcoTank series. These models offer great value with their large ink reservoirs and cost-efficient printing.

Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems. So, we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, suggestions, or support for printer repairs. We offer an in-person evaluation and repair service via our local diagnostic facility (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Given the high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis. So, it might take a few weeks before we can get your printer to drop it off or mail it to us. Our services are structured to repair either a whole printer or specific parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed if you opt for mail-in or local drop-off services. However, we acknowledge that our rates aren't the most economical. Thus, we highly recommend that you resort to self-help via online research. You can start by checking out YouTube or visiting our YouTube channel's homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Look for specific videos using the search icon next to "About" on the right-hand side of the menu bar. I receive dozens of queries every day asking about videos for specific topics. Having created videos over the past nine years, it's challenging to remember every single one. Therefore, using YouTube's search function would be most efficient. Plus, YouTube might suggest relevant videos from other channels that could assist you.

Thank you again for reaching out to us! We hope these steps help you resolve the issues with your Epson XP-7100 printer. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us or explore our YouTube channel for more detailed tutorials and guides.
