What is PIS sensor and what does a PIS sensor do?

PIS Sensor.  Some people call it "Photo Ink Sensor". It is an analog proximity sensor that measures the reflection of infrared from objects.   According to Kevin, Epson's A2140859 sensor board has a capacitor to clean out the input, then the rest of data can be found by looking at Sharp GP2Y0A21YK. If your printer's PIS sensor is broken, it will throw non-recoverable errors during start up.  However, the sensor can be easily replaced.

Before ordering it, make sure the model number matches the A number on the back (see photos above).  This sensor board is widely used in WorkForce (WF), Expression Home (XP), and other series.  Because the board is so simple, just a sensor and a capacity, as long as it fits in your printer, you can try it even your model number doesn't match (no gurantee).  Therefore, we included detailed measurements (see photos) in case you want to try to replace a different model.
