How to Fix Epson WF-7620 Printhead Replacement Error 0x97?

Question:
We have recently installed a new printhead and FFC cable on the Epson WorkForce WF-7620 after determining that the original cable had a burnt-out pin. Solution 3: This solution resolved our error 0x97; however, printing issues emerged. At first, my nozzle check came back blank (no ink at all). We’ve done multiple head cleanings over the last few days for about 60% color restoration, but black is still out and coverage is poor. We’re worried that doing too many cleanings will result in Error 0x9A. We’ve gone through all the usual troubleshooting steps and could use expert advice here, such as calling Epson, which will probably land us scripted responses.
Answer:
Possible Causes & Solutions:
Ink Delivery Issues
You have noticed gradual improvement with each successive clean, which likely indicates an air leak in the ink lines or dampers impeding ink flow.
Manual Priming: Use a syringe to pull ink through the capping station’s waste tube manually. There should be some resistance. If only air is coming through, there might be a problem with the ink supply.
Check Ink Cartridge or CISS System: Confirm that your ink cartridges or continuous ink supply system (CISS) are operating correctly. If using a CISS, verify that all tubing is adequately oriented and does not draw air bubbles.
Actual capping station in field and pumping inspection
It is the capping station, which seals the printhead and pulls ink through it during clean cycles. If it isn’t working correctly, cleanings will not help.
If it is open, rotate the cannula so that it is pointed downwards, and try to push 1.5–2 ml of ink through the waste line with a syringe. If you feel no resistance or only draft air, the capping station might have a bad seal or a blockage.
If you suspect ink buildup, inspect the area around the capping station for dried inks and gently clean it with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
Printhead Parking & Resting
Allow the printhead to rest overnight at the capping station so that ink can set in place.
Avoid cleaning cycles. Multiple runs can oversaturate the printhead, which in turn causes an overworked pump system and Error 0x9A.
FFC Cable Connection Check
The burnt pin on the original FFC cable makes it even more critical to ensure the new cable is correctly oriented.
Please make sure that the FFC cable is aligned and undamaged, and that it’s properly seated.
A FFC cable that is misaligned or damaged will result in colors not printing or not printing consistently.
Potential Board Damage
If an electrical fault caused the original burnt pin, the mainboard may be broken, affecting how signals arrive at the printhead.
If none of the above works, try a different FFC cable (if you have one) or inspect the printer’s logic board for damage.
Final Thoughts & Next Steps:
Use a syringe to suck ink through the waste line manually to prime the ink system.
Ensure the capping station makes a solid seal and is not clogged.
Instead of running multiple cleaning cycles, let the printer rest overnight.
Check the FFC cable and reseat it to eliminate connection problems.
Look for Error 0x9A, which may signal a pump failure or overuse from too many cleanings.
A deeper hardware diagnosis may be needed if these steps do not completely fix the problem.
The mechanics and electronics used can make issues with printers complicated. Since remote troubleshooting has only been going so far, we perform an in-house evaluation and repair at our local diagnostic shop (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Our services are first come, first served, and it may take us several weeks to process your printer. Our area of specialization is both whole-printer repairs and specific component replacements, but we also encourage DIY troubleshooting when applicable as a cost-efficient alternative.
