Epson ET-8550 Grabs Paper Then Spits It Out (Brand New): Causes, "Paper Jam" Errors, and What to Do Next

Question

My Epson ET-8550 is brand new, but it grabs the paper and then spits it back out. It won't feed properly and acts like there's a paper jam. What causes this and how can I fix it?

Answer

When an ET-8550 pulls paper in and then ejects it back out, that behavior usually means the printer did not "confirm" paper movement the way it expected. In plain terms: the printer tries to feed, then a sensor (or the logic interpreting the sensor) decides something is wrong-so it aborts the feed and ejects the sheet to prevent a real jam.

Even though people often call it a "paper jam," on a brand-new unit this can be triggered by several things that aren't a true jam.

1) The most common causes on a brand-new ET-8550

A) Feed detection / paper path sensor not reading correctly

Epson inkjets rely on sensors to detect:

  • paper presence at pickup,

  • movement/timing as the rollers rotate,

  • whether the leading edge reached the expected position.

If one sensor is misaligned, blocked, defective, or its signal isn't being interpreted correctly, the printer may grab → hesitate → eject and sometimes display a paper jam / paper feed message.

Common real-world triggers include:

  • a small packing tab, film, or shipping material still inside the paper path,

  • a sensor flag stuck from shipping,

  • debris/dust from packaging,

  • a defective sensor out of the box (it happens).

B) Paper / tray setup mismatch

This sounds basic, but it's a frequent cause of "feed then eject" on new machines:

  • Paper guides too tight (binding the sheet) or too loose (paper skews).

  • Paper loaded under/over the guide tabs incorrectly.

  • Wrong Paper Size or Paper Type selected in driver/panel (printer expects a different feed behavior).

  • Using paper that's too slick, curled, or thick for the selected path.

C) Pickup roller traction issue (rare on brand new, but possible)

If the pickup roller slips, the printer may start a feed but fail to achieve consistent movement. The firmware then assumes a jam risk and ejects.

D) Duplex / rear feed path confusion

On some printers, a mismatch between the selected feed source (rear tray vs. cassette) and actual loading can cause a pickup attempt followed by an immediate abort.

2) What you can safely check (non-invasive, no disassembly)

Because your unit is brand new, the goal is to avoid anything that could complicate your warranty. These are safe checks you can do:

  • Remove all paper, then reload 10-15 sheets of plain letter/A4 (fresh, not curled).

  • Set the side guides so they just touch the paper-no bowing.

  • Confirm you're using the correct feed source (rear tray vs cassette) and that the printer/driver selection matches.

  • On the printer screen and in the driver, match Paper Size and Paper Type to what's actually loaded.

  • Open the rear access/paths (as allowed by Epson), and look for obvious shipping material or scraps of packaging.

  • Try a different paper brand (some glossy/coated stocks can slip or confuse feeding when settings don't match).

If the printer still grabs and ejects immediately with plain paper and correct settings, that's a strong sign of:

  • a sensor problem,

  • a mechanical alignment problem from shipping,

  • or a defective unit.

3) Error codes and messages to watch for

In your message, you didn't provide a specific numeric error code (for example, codes like 0x... or an E- code). What you did describe is the classic "paper feed/paper jam" symptom pattern: pickup starts, then the printer aborts and ejects.

If your ET-8550 shows an on-screen message like "Paper Jam", "Paper out", "Load paper", or "Paper feed error", note the exact wording and whether it names a feed source (rear tray/cassette). Those details help distinguish:

  • "no pickup detected" (roller/traction/paper/pickup sensor),

  • vs. "timing/path not detected" (paper path sensor/encoder/timing).

4) The best move (because it's brand new): contact Epson for warranty replacement/repair

Since your printer is brand new, and the symptom appears right away, your best move is exactly what you suggested: contact Epson immediately and request warranty service or a replacement. A new printer shouldn't need roller work, sensor realignment, or internal adjustment. If it's behaving this way out of the box, you want Epson to handle it under warranty rather than you sinking time (or risk) into deeper troubleshooting.

This is one of those situations where "DIY" can accidentally turn a warranty slam-dunk into a complicated claim-so let Epson make it right.

Printer issues can be a complicated, hands-on problem-especially anything involving paper feeding, sensors, and mechanical timing-so we're not able to provide remote troubleshooting, step-by-step repair suggestions, or remote support for printer repairs. We do offer an in-person evaluation and repair service through our local diagnostic facility: BCH Technologies printer repair service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Due to high demand, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we can accept your printer for drop-off. Our services are structured to repair either a full printer or specific parts, with clear instructions on how to proceed. That said, we recognize our rates aren't the cheapest, so we strongly encourage self-help through online research when possible.

A great place to start is YouTube, including our channel homepage: BCH Technologies on YouTube (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Use the search icon next to "About" on the right side of the menu bar to find specific topics. I receive dozens of questions daily asking if we have a video for a particular issue, and after years of making videos, it's hard to remember every single one-so using YouTube's search is the fastest approach. Plus, YouTube may suggest helpful videos from other channels as well.

Thanks again for reaching out, and I'm sorry you're dealing with this right out of the box. I hope Epson gets you a quick warranty replacement so you can get printing without any more headaches.
