Cracking the Cartridge Lockout Code on HP OfficeJet Models

Question:
So the cartridge locks to the serial number? Is that why, say, newer HP OfficeJet models (8710, 8720, 9010, 9020) with some system supply problems will not take new cartridges even if HP itself recommends that they be replaced?
Answer:
Yes you are right newer hp officejet models use serial number locking for cartridge management, but the process is different for different models. Cheaper printers would remember the last 3 to 5 sets of cartridge serial numbers, preventing them to be reused. Well higher end ones like the one you posted (8710, 8720, 9010, and 9020) have more advanced systems. Ink count data is recorded on the cartridge chip for these printers, whereas the error state is stored in the printer’s memory. The good news is that these models only store the error state in memory for the last cartridge used, so simply inserting a new cartridge with a different serial number generally clears it.
This is on top of the previously able cartridge errors that were preventable with newer gen firmware. If you keep getting cartridge errors with no way to resolve it, you may need to do a full reset of the printer or firmware downgrade (which I’ll note I’m sure would do wonders) to contain the lockout. Be careful when down-grading firmware though as HP releases new firmware regularly to tighten cartridge restrictions.
A Note on Printer Repairs
Printer issues can be a complex affair, owing to the handheld business of it all. We cannot be responsible for remote diagnostics, recommendations, or printer repairs. We also have a local diagnostic shop for dropping a printer off for diagnostics and repair (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service), and while this service is in high demand and performed first come first served (and might take weeks to drop off the printer), we can offer it.
Our services for the repair include the full printer or specific components with detailed instructions on how to handle both. Although our prices are not the cheapest available, we recommend you try self-help via our YouTube channel homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies); feel free to use the search bar and you'll find videos & tutorials that could help you resolve cartridge lockouts and firmware errors yourself.
