Question:
I Just replaced the head, but my DTF prints are still fading with white ink and banding?! About halfway through the print, is when things start going wrong and we see lines of thinner ink. Is it because of the ink lines? How can I resolve this issue?

Thank you for reaching out to us! We at BCH Technologies greatly appreciate your engagement and support, especially for our YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies). Your feedback is invaluable in helping us improve our technical expertise.
Now, regarding your problem: fading white ink and banding lines are common issues in DTF printing, and they can stem from a variety of factors. Based on your description, here are a few things to consider:
-
Ink Conglomeration:
White ink is notorious for settling and forming a thick, gel-like substance if left idle for too long. Unlike other inks, white pigment tends to sink to the bottom, forming clogs. This process can start within minutes, and if not actively managed, clogs can develop in as little as 15 minutes. This is why it is essential to constantly stir or circulate the white ink to keep it in suspension. In your case, even though you've replaced the printhead, it doesn't resolve the problem that the ink in the lines or tanks might have already settled and congealed. If white ink is sitting in the lines for an extended period, it can create the exact issue you're describing—fading halfway through the print job and leading to banding.
-
Ink Line and Tank Maintenance:
It is crucial to maintain proper circulation in the ink lines and tanks. Allowing ink to sit idle, especially white ink, can lead to hard-to-remove clogs in both the tubes and dampers. If your previous printhead exhibited the same problem, it’s very likely that the underlying issue is related to these components. Make sure you flush and clean out the ink lines and dampers thoroughly before using your new printhead. -
Capping Station Issues:
Many people overlook the role of the capping station in maintaining print quality. A poorly functioning or clogged capping station can prevent proper sealing and hydration of the printhead, leading to issues like ink drying on the head and reduced ink flow, which often results in banding or faded prints. When replacing a printhead, it’s highly recommended to also clean or replace the capping station. This ensures a tight seal that keeps your printhead in optimal condition between print jobs.
To address the problem more holistically:
- Circulate your ink regularly to prevent settling, especially for white ink.
- Service the lines and dampers by flushing them out to remove any built-up sediment or ink clogs.
- Check and clean the capping station whenever replacing the printhead to ensure it’s functioning correctly.
Addressing printer issues can be a complicated affair due to the hands-on nature of the problems.
