How to Fix Epson ET-2720 Error E-02: Scanner and Motherboard Issues

Question:

I have a 1-year-old Epson ET-2720 that I bought new. The other night, while trying to use the scanner for the first time, it stopped mid-scan and displayed an E-02 error message. I’ve tried basic troubleshooting methods, such as turning it off and on, unplugging it, and cleaning the cables per your YouTube video. None of this has worked.

When the printer is turned on, there’s a buzzing sound from the front right of the unit, near the ink cartridges, which you identified as where the motherboard is located. The scanner doesn’t move, and the white light on the scanner no longer turns on. The printer still prints wirelessly from my Mac (running OS 12.7.6), but I can’t do anything from the control panel, and scanning is no longer possible.

I contacted Epson support, but they only suggested purchasing a new printer, which seems wasteful.

In this article, I am going to discuss two of the most common problems of Epson ET-2720 that are E-01 and E-02 errors, so if you are one of those who is facing these problems in your Epson Ecotank, such as ET 2750, ET-2800ET-4800 or other Epson Printers, then stay with post. E-02: There is an internal problem with the printer, and E-02 is a standard code, meaning it cannot function normally. Being a generic error, it is hard to tell exactly what's happening without more information. And judging by your definition — she does sound like a monster. — Maybe there are some number of these derelict issues.

1. Error: Scanner Motor/Cable is faultyExplanation: The scanner motor is faulty.

If scans don't occur(the scanner does move & scanner light turns on ), the cause of the problem is in the scanner motor or connections. Now, that buzzing you hear might be the motor trying to operate and not quite getting there due to a mechanical or electrical issue. So, if you have already cleaned the cables, which is a great first line of defense, the next possible suspect would be a bad or disconnected scanner motor. Check the internal wiring to ensure all connections are stable, and search for broken wires – burnt or frayed — that could be problematic for motor operation.

2. Motherboard Issues

You may experience a high buzzing noise near the motherboard at the front right of the printer. I am unsure if you are facing the front of the printer. If you are facing the front of the printer, the mainboard is on your left, and it is possible that the board itself does not send appropriate signals to the scanner motor. This indicates that a current is being sent but not processed, possibly caused by a defective capacitor or another board component. The crashing might very well be a motherboard problem in cases like this. At a glance, you can inspect the motherboard and see if there are burnt components or damaged parts, but troubleshooting further is difficult without some electrical tools.

3. Control Panel Malfunction

If the control panel isn't responding but the printer can still print wirelessly from your Mac, the issue might be limited to the control panel and not affect core printing functions. In some cases, this can be due to a software glitch, the firmware being corrupted, or an issue with the ribbon cable connecting the control panel to a motherboard. In this case, a reset or firmware reinstallation of the printer can solve the problem.

4. Firmware or Software Conflict

Since you're on macOS 12.7.6, verifying if there is no conflict between the Epson drivers and the OS is worthwhile. Lastly, since your Epson printer can at least print over Wi-Fi, please ensure you already have the latest version of the driver installed. Occasionally, printer problems could be caused by software incompatibility, even though your hardware has done its job perfectly.

Therefore, your problem is probably at the scanner or the mainboard. Both of them require professional help to troubleshoot and repair.
