In this article, we break down a comprehensive approach to disassembling and assessing the condition of the L1800's waste capping station.
Testing the Cap Station
Before diving headfirst into disassembly, one must test the capping or waste station to ascertain its condition. Start by turning on the printer, allowing the printer carriage to move to the left before cutting the main power. This will free the printer carriage for examination. To check for any blockages, use a syringe to draw ink from the waste tank outlet. Difficulty in drawing ink, combined with a wet waste pad, is a clear indication of clogged tubes.
Unscrewing the Waste Capping Station
The waste capping station is held in place by seven screws. However, depending on the modifications done to the printer, some might have a front bar removed, causing it to miss screws. Typically, the first two screws can be located in the front region, while the third one is deeply placed inside the casing. For this, a long screwdriver will come in handy. As you progress, you'll find that the fourth screw is placed on top of the capping station, the fifth on the side panel, the sixth at the back connecting to the orange wires, and finally, the seventh inside the casing.
Disconnecting the Motor Wiring
The capping station features a motor, which means there's wiring to disconnect. The motor wire extends to the right on the main board. To remove the unit with the wire, focus on the release tabs. Two can be found on each side, while an additional four tabs are located at the back. A gentle jiggle should release these tabs, allowing you to remove the wiring unit.
Extracting the Duplexer
Although this step can be optional depending on your printer's modification, loosening or removing the duplexer can make the process smoother. By focusing on the screws – one on the right and two on the left – you can free the metal bracket on the roller.
Detaching the Cap Station
With the preceding steps done, it's time to remove the cap station. Begin by taking out the metal piece holding down the station. You'll notice that Epson has marked the position, but for precision, you might want to use a lighter pen to re-mark it. Once this is done, you can slide the cap station forward. Depending on your printer's modification, you might need to take out a couple more screws on the top rail to easily remove the waste station.
By the end of this process, your L1800's waste capping station should be successfully detached, leaving it ready for repair or replacement. Remember, meticulousness is key to avoiding unnecessary costs and ensuring the longevity of your printer.
