This article is for solving Ink System Failure' or '0x ...' , for HP Deskjet, Officejet, and Photosmart printers that use 564, 364, 178, 862, or 920 ink cartridges. The error is caused by

The error is caused by cartridge not supplying enough ink to the printhead.

Step 1: Make sure the cartridge can supply enough ink to the printhead.  Refill the cartridge to full.

  • If you use refillable cartridge, make sure to tear off the yellow sticker and expose the air hole.  Check the air hole too.  Sometimes the remainder of the yellow tape is still blocking the air hole.  Use a pin to puncture a hole if that is the case.
  • If you use the OEM cartridge, the air hole is in the middle of the cartridge.  Tear off the OEM label and make sure there is nothing to block the air hole

Step 2: Reset the printer error

  • Put another set of cartridges into the printer.  It doesn't need to be OEM cartridge.  They can be Setup cartridges or non-OEM cartridges.  If you buy two sets of non-OEM cartridges from the same supplier, they may be stamped with the same serial number so it may not work.  Also, these cartridges have to be useable.  Otherwise, the printer will generate more errors, instead of unlocking the printer.  Use the cartridge to print a page or two.  The printer is unlocked.

Step 3: Put the 1st set of cartridge back.  The problem should be solved.
