Can You Reset or Refill Epson WF-4820 / 822XL Cartridges? (Complete Q&A Guide)

Question

A customer asked whether the Epson WF-4820 using 822XL cartridges can be reset or refilled. They referenced the video "5 Epson Secrets Revealed! Refill Original Cartridge & Print Free Forever!" and wanted to know if a compatible reset tool exists for their printer model.

Answer

When it comes to the Epson WF-4820 and its 822 / 822XL cartridges, the situation is unfortunately very restrictive. As you suspected, these cartridges cannot be handled the same way as the refillable or resettable cartridges demonstrated in some of our other videos.

Here are the key details:

✔ No Chip Resetter for 822 / 822XL Cartridges

Epson's 822-series cartridges use a newer-generation security chip. At this time, no commercial chip resetter exists that supports these chips. Resetters for older models (e.g., 252, 288, 802) are not compatible and cannot be modified to work.

✔ Cartridges Cannot Be Made Chipless

Some Epson models allow users to install "chipless firmware," enabling printing without recognizing ink chips.
The WF-4820 does not support chipless solutions, and firmware bypassing is not available for its cartridge platform.

✔ Cartridges Cannot Be Refilled

Even if physically refilled, the printer will still reject the cartridge due to the ink level chip. Because there is no resetter or chipless firmware, the printer will continue to show the cartridges as empty and will not allow printing.

Epson designed the WF-4820 cartridge system with these locked-down protections. So unfortunately:

"The WF-4820 can't be refilled, can't be reset, and can't run chipless-there is currently no workaround."

If this ever changes-such as the release of compatible aftermarket chips-we will update our website and YouTube channel immediately.

Addressing printer issues can sometimes be surprisingly complex, especially since many problems require hands-on diagnosis. For that reason, we can't offer remote troubleshooting or repair recommendations beyond general guidance. If you'd like professional assistance, we offer in-person diagnostics through our local repair facility at BCH Technologies Printer Repair Service (https://bchtechnologies.com/printer-repair-service). Because of high demand, appointments are handled on a first-come, first-served basis, and it may take a few weeks before we can check in a printer. We repair full units or individual components and provide clear instructions on how to proceed if you choose this route. Our pricing is not the cheapest option, so we strongly recommend starting with self-help research-especially through YouTube. You can search our channel's homepage (https://youtube.com/@bchtechnologies) using the small search icon next to the "About" tab.
