Today, we will be working on the Epson ET-2550, one of the earlier models of the Epson EcoTank printer. We’ll specifically focus on removing the printhead so you can replace it.

When you open your printer, the first thing you’ll notice is that there’s a white plastic cover in the way. You’ll have to remove the one screw holding that in place and then pull up on the tab so you can lift the cover upward and toward the left.

Now that you’ve exposed the ink cartridges, we’ll need a tool to help us. It’s a simple hooked dentist’s tool you can order from Amazon. The ink cartridges have a little plastic clip under a tab that clips in to hold them in place, which is what we need the dentist’s tool for. Use it to push in on the tab and then lift on the cartridge. You might have to feel around for it with your finger, as doing so with the dentist’s tool can be difficult.

Once you've removed the cartridges, you’ll see the white plastic piece they clip into. That’s what we’ll be working on removing next. You should be able to see that there are two little white strips on either side. We’ll have to use the dentist’s tool to push up and in on those to get this piece out. A trick I’ve learned is that if you use one hand to push on the tabs, holding the center of this piece with the other hand can prevent it from continuously falling back into place.

Now we can finally work on removing the printhead itself. Three screws are holding it in place that we’ll need to remove. The first two will be on the top of the assembly, and the third will be in the bottom left corner. There will be one last tab to lift, but it’s in a hard-to-reach location near the FFC cables, which you have to be very careful not to poke with the dentist’s tool, or else you could damage them.
